The first picture is of my class bear, who sits at his own little desk and occasionally disappears “on vacation” to encourage letter writing. He disappears, then students write him letters, and he will reply if they include a greeting, at least two/three sentences, and a closing…and later in the year he gets more strict and won’t reply unless the capitals and punctuation are correct as well. While on a trip, he will give hints about where he is, different hints to different students, so they will compare letters and try to figure out where he is or what he is doing. I try to find things for him to “bring back” from his vacations (often things that connect with our lessons if I can, like the little sombrero he brought back from Mexico, just as we were starting a unit on Mexico). When he is in the classroom, writing him a letter is one of our literacy centers, and a highly popular one.
So, I’m always on the lookout for new, bear-sized costume bits I can use. This past weekend, we visited family…and my aunt had a bag of bear clothes and accessories for me! Look at them! I love the fishing gear the most, complete with a little floppy fish! There are adorable wee shoes, lots of new shirts, shorts, and hats (more than pictured above), and even a cute little set of golf clubs. My bear will be going on such exciting adventures this year!
