Today we had a big discussion about all the Eric Carle books we’ve read (we’ve read a lot more than what you see on the chart, as that’s just for the insect books). The kids noticed that not only does Carle put in lessons and facts, his books often include patterns, repeated phrases, and the time of day. We filled in a sentence pattern chart (which started with a generic “insect” in the noun space, then I covered it so kids could insert their own insect choice there) just to get ideas for our own stories, and I had the kids create a sentence from the chart and even act it out, which was *hilarious*.
We started our story plans by choosing a title and a problem (because these two things go together in these stories), and some of the faster finishers also decided on a setting and time of day. Tomorrow we will plan our supporting characters and a solution/resolution, and start the rough drafts!
